White Rose Cafe @ York Hotel

I've always known York Hotel for the place for Penang food and of late they had a couple of attractive $10 nett meals which I completely forgot about. Located just a stone's throw away from Goodwood, maybe not a stone's throw away but near enough to make your calf muscles tense and well stretched. York Hotel strikes as a no frills hotel, minimal fuss and lacks a certain grandeur found in most of the hotels located in Orchard. The cafe was relatively packed for a weekday and filled with mostly foreigners.

White Rose cafe, with a name so exquisite I was expecting a certain charm from it. Naming conventions once again.

Warm crusty bread with butter!

Panfried Chicken in Herbs & Wine served with Sauteed Vegetables and Roasted Potatoes

The portions were just right with the nicely fried yet juicy chicken meat. The juices were well flavoured though I could not taste much of the herbs nor wine but the sauteed vegetables were tasty.

Lamb Kebab served with Salsa Sauce and Buttered Rice

Well seared lamb cubes with sweet peppers and button mushrooms. The lamb was cooked to the right doneness, not too tough, not to raw. However, the buttered rice stole the thunder from the kebab...each grain well coated with butter, tasted almost like fragrant coconut rice! We could not stop eating the rice!

Baked Blue Mussels served with Seafood Fettuccini

A personal favourite. Fettuccini's my preferred choice for pasta maybe because the flat noodles absorb the flavours better than the rest? Just a personal thought...but White Rose Cafe did a neat job for this Italian dish! The cream sauce was not overly cloying, just nice infact! The baked cheese mussels were plump and fresh, so did the rest of the seafood gems of prawns, scallops and fish fillets.

Grilled Salmon with Green Tea Noodle

Comparatively, this was less outstanding. The grilled salmon had a slightly fishy aftertaste, green tea noodle tasted more like "Ee-mian". Not a favourite.

American Cheesecake ($5.50)

Surpassed expectations indeed, the cheesecake had some bite in all its density, balancing its moist yet firm texture well.

Apple Crumble ($4.50)

Served warm, the crumble held on quite decently with its crunchy exterior and moist spiced apple filling within. I opted without the icecream as no vanilla bean was in sight, sigh..the perils of being in the know of the major difference the black specks make.

The food was enjoyable but service had major lapses. By all standard, York does not strike one as a 5 star but having your waitress "tsk" and purse her lips because a table of three ordered four dishes, making it difficult for her to place the dishes is absolutely uncalled for. Despite that, overall friendly service, decent food at pocket friendly prices.

Mains are $19++, 1-for-1
Enjoy additional complimentary tea/coffee and a 50% discount off soups and/or desserts from the a la carte menu.
